An estimated 80% of children with autism spectrum disorder have sensory processing disorder. Sensory processing issues can lead to difficulties in fine motor and gross motor skills, participation in activities of daily living, and social and recreational activities. Participants will be able to identify (a) terminology associated with sensory processing disorder and sensory integration; (b) common signs and symptoms associated with sensory processing disorder; (c) the effects of sensory processing problems on language, cognition, behavior, motor skills, and social-emotional equilibrium; (d) what a sensory diet is (e) examples of sensory diet strategies for each sensory subtype (f) how to assess a child’s need for a sensory diet; and (e) how to incorporate a sensory diet into the family routine.
