This approach has demonstrated significant efficacy in promotion of social communicative initiations of child participants that generalize and sustain over time. This lecture will provide an overview of the extensive PACT research base as well as an introduction to the core therapeutic techniques and targets associated with the model. Participants will follow one family’s journey through PACT and will gain insight into how this developmental, relationship based model promotes well-being in entire family systems. Objectives Participants will summarize the Pediatric Autism Communication Therapy (PACT) model, emphasizing its impact on a child's social communication competencies. Participants will list the key strategies and techniques used in the PACT approach. < Back Jennifer Cleveland, PhD Licensed Psychologist Dr. Jennifer Cleveland received her degree from the University of North Texas. She has worked in various settings (and states!) throughout her career including community mental health, the pediatrics department at Bronx Lebanon Hospital, and the school health program through Montefiore Hospital. She has always loved to work with children and adolescents and has a special passion for evaluations and neuropsychological testing. In 2015 Dr. Cleveland became a faculty member at Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) in New Jersey, where she served as the administrator for a program providing support for autistic college students. After four years at FDU, Jennifer decided it was time to get back to Texas and began working at UTSA’s former Counseling and Mental Health Services from 2019 – 2021. She left in 2021 to begin private practice full time where she particularly enjoyed evaluating and providing treatment for autistic adults. Jennifer served on the executive committee of the Bexar County Psychological Association as their Early Career Psychologist representative and wrote her first book chapter in 2022 in the book titled, Postsecondary Transition for College- or Career-bound Autistic Students. She joined ACN's clinical team in August of 2023 and is excited to contribute to the organization. < Back Carrie Alvarado, PhD, OTR Chief Operating Officer Dr. Carrie Alvarado serves as the Chief Operating Officer for Autism Community Network (ACN). Carrie has a PhD in Infant and Early Childhood Development with an emphasis on Infant Mental Health and Developmental Disorders. Dr. Alvarado is the creator and director of the Earliest Connections Clinic, our diagnostic program geared toward early identification and therapeutic intervention for high-risk infants and toddlers. Additionally, Carrie leads the DIRFloortime and PACT therapy/teletherapy programs- intensive intervention programs supporting families impacted by autism through dyadic coaching using both in-vivo and reflective video feedback modalities. Dr. Alvarado's primary research interests are in Sensoriaffective Integration and attachment, clinical use of reflective video feedback, and in optimizing parent-mediated interventions via the modality of telepractice. She completed her dissertation on establishing preliminary validity of a new clinical assessment and coaching tool, the Sensoriaffective Interactional Attunement Scale (SAIAS), geared toward promoting enhanced use of sensoriaffective signaling between caregivers and their children. Carrie is also currently engaged in development of another scale, the Emotional Intelligence and Praxis in Play Scale (EIPPS), focused on evaluating the presence, sophistication, flexibility and organization of themes of emotional intelligence in child-led, symbolic, dyadic play. Dr. Alvarado was the first in the United States to become a Pediatric Autism Communication Therapy (PACT) Accredited Practitioner and she serves as an Associate with PACT UK. Carrie is a DIR®Floortime™ Certified Expert Clinician, and she serves as an Assistant Faculty for the Profectum™ foundation. Dr. Alvarado has also served as the lead for the Clinical Advisory Committee for STAR Institute, in Colorado. She is Core Faculty for the Fielding Graduate School of Psychology and Adjunct Faculty for the UT Health OTD Program. She has worked with autistic individuals since 2012, first as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) to provide quality based Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to children who were diagnosed with autism. After 6 years as an RBT, while also serving in various leadership roles, Vanessa has served children and families in an administrative role. Lightening the Load: Promoting Relational and Sensory Safety in Schools Time PM Breakout Session - 2:15 PM Presenter/Facilitator Adrienne Gaither, OTR, C-SIPT, NDT, PACT Accredited Provider and Kathryn Benson, MPA Back to Course List < Back About the Course This session aims to equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of sensory processing and its crucial role in integrated child development within a school and classroom setting. Using current research, the course will explain the science behind sensory processing and sensory overload. Participants will learn to address individual student needs while creating a neurodiversity-affirming classroom environment by focusing on a common sensory experience for all learners. Leaders will discuss how a proactive approach to meeting sensory needs and creating a relationally and sensory safe space promotes prosocial behaviors in students and enhances overall classroom management. Objectives Participants will explain sensory processing and its role in child development, including the effect of sensory dysregulation on peer relationships and the importance of sensory integration. Participants will identify and address individual and group sensory needs in the school setting, including sensory-seeking or avoiding behaviors, signs of a sensory-based "meltdown," the use of sensory supports to promote peer interactions and relational bandwidth. Participants will differentiate between co- and self- regulation in the school setting and implement strategies for calming an overloaded child. About your Instructors Adrienne Gaither, OTR, C-SIPT, NDT, PACT Accredited Provider Adrienne Gaither, OTR, has been a pediatric occupational therapist for over 25 years. She received her degree from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and began her pediatric therapy career, eventually gaining experience in every setting available for the provision of children’s occupational therapy services. Adrienne has had the opportunity to serve as a member of ACN’s team since 2009. She holds specialty pediatric certification in the Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests (SIPT) and has completed advanced training in Neurodevelopmental Treatment (NDT) for children as well as in the Sequential Oral Sensory (S.O.S.) feeding approach. Locally, Adrienne had the privilege of serving on the planning team for the development of Morgan’s Wonderland; in particular, contributing recommendations for the Sensory Village portion of the park. In addition to her work with ACN, Adrienne is a part-time Program Director and Sensory Consultant with Kinetic Kids, Inc., a local non-profit agency providing sports and recreation activities for children and teenagers with special needs. When she is not working, Adrienne enjoys life with her husband, 2 children, and 2 dogs, running, singing, and traveling. Kathryn Benson, MPA Kathryn “Katie'' Benson has a Bachelor's degree from Florida State University and a Masters in Public Administration with a concentration in NonProfit Management from the University of Texas Arlington. She spent 14 years total in the public education setting as a special educator and district leader. While with the public school system, Katie specialized in working with neurodivergent students, and opened two new autism units, including one focused on addressing neurodiverse needs in a general education setting. In the past, she has worked with other nonprofits in San Antonio to create and improve programming for neurodiverse populations and children and adolescents with other developmental differences. Katie joined the programs team at Autism Community Network (ACN) in the summer of 2023. Since that time, her role has grown to include hands-on involvement in ACN educational and camp programs, as well as planning and executing ACN’s quarterly family events. She enjoys working with the incredible staff at ACN to create a relational and sensory safe “home away from home” for the autism community in San Antonio. PACT Parent Panel: The Secret Ingredient was ME! Time PM Breakout Session - 2:15 PM Presenter/Facilitator Anna Paola Smith, LCSW, PACT Accredited Provider Back to Course List < Back About the Course Primary caregivers of young autistic children are increasingly searching for effective means of promoting their child’s mental health and socio-communicative abilities while simultaneously honoring their child’s neurodiversity. Research in PACT has told us that neurodivergent children who are met with parents who can attune, who can validate, and who can meet the child where they are, become increasingly confident and communicative as they grow. Parents report PACT support as a “game-changer” for themselves and for their children, and, most importantly, for their relationships with each other. The goal of this panel is for parent’s to share their experience with this new form of autism support, one that addresses the health and empowerment of the entire family system. Objectives Participants will list how PACT strategies support the social intentionality and socio communicative abilities in children, how the approach capitalizes on the modality of reflective video feedback, and how PACT intervention differs from traditional models of autism intervention. Anna Paola Smith, LCSW, PACT Accredited Provider Anna Paola Smith attended The University of Texas at Austin where she received her BA in Psychology and her Masters degree in Social Work. She has had the opportunity to work with children and families in the school, hospital, and clinical settings. Anna Paola's interests lie in family systems and how the development of one child may impact the entire family unit. She started a sibling support group at Autism Community Network to provide siblings a safe space to share their own experiences. Anna Paola also provides routine follow-ups for caregivers after their child receives an autism diagnosis and is a bilingual Pediatric Autism Communication Therapy Accredited Practitioner, supporting families impacted by autism through dyadic coaching. Anna Paola is part of an interdisciplinary diagnostic team that uses a strength-based approach to address the unique presentation of the child and family.
